Manama, Bahrain Announced as Host City for 2019 Global Entrepreneurship Congress

The Global Entrepreneurship Network announced today that it will partner with Tamkeen, the Bahrain Labor Fund, to host the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s capital city of Manama in April 2019. The annual gathering fosters cross border collaboration between entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, policymakers and entrepreneurial support organizations in more than 170 countries.
A recent study has shown that the rate of young Bahrainis who want to start their own business (70 percent) is twice that of other countries in the Persian Gulf region.
“Entrepreneurship is on the rise in Bahrain and these young firms are the key driver of economic growth,” said Jonathan Ortmans, president of the Global Entrepreneurship Network. “Manama will provide an opportunity to explore innovative and effective approaches to stimulating entrepreneurial activity from around the world.”
The announcement was made at an event at the United Nations celebrating the 10th anniversary of Global Entrepreneurship Week – a celebration that encompasses 35,000 events, activities and competitions with roughly 10 million participants.
The partnership between GEN and the Kingdom of Bahrain is supported by Tamkeen, a semi-governmental organization that has been working to advance entrepreneurship for more than 10 years. In that time, it has launched more than 200 programs and initiatives focused on areas such as funding and financing, skill and career progression, customized employment schemes, and entrepreneurship exposure, amongst many others.
“We are perfectly placed to host an event on entrepreneurship, new business and business innovation,” said Dr. Ebrahim Janahi, CEO of Tamkeen. “We have a history of proactively developing and enacting programs designed to empower Bahrainis and new enterprises. Bahrain has a history of investing in our human resource and the private sector.
“The event will bring together Bahrain’s best and brightest business minds, to provide a platform for thought leadership and greater cooperation between Bahrain and its international partners.”
The Global Entrepreneurship Congress has previously been held in the Kansas City (2009), Dubai (2010), Shanghai (2011), Liverpool (2012), Rio de Janeiro (2013), Moscow (2014), Milan (2015), Medellin (2016) and Johannesburg (2017). The 10th anniversary of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress will occur in Istanbul in April 2018.
